The Mesquite Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy is a thirty-six-hour program designed to give the citizens of Mesquite a working knowledge of the Mesquite Police Department. The classes are three hours in length, one night a week, for a total of twelve weeks.

A primary objective of the academy is to build understanding between citizens and law enforcement officers who serve them. It is hoped that through the educational process, public awareness will be increased, suspicions and misconceptions dispelled, and finally, that a lasting rapport will be forged between law enforcement and the public.

After Graduation from the academy, citizens become better prepared to cope with criminal incidents, are more willing to report crime, and realize the need to testify when they observe a crime.

Course topics are presented by volunteer officers who specialize in virtually every aspect of law enforcement including: personnel selection and training, penal code, use of force concepts, history of policing, criminal investigations, crime scene investigation, accident investigation, emergency and disaster preparedness, fiscal planning, community services, and critical issues in policies.

The Citizen Police Academy provides two-way communication between police officers and the community to eradicate barriers and improve the quality of life for all residents and business owners in the City of Mesquite.

Announcements:

Our New Citizen Police Academy Alumni Plate Scan Vehicle has been officially released to the MCPAAA to start using immediately!  This vehicle is equipped with the latest Plate Scan Technology that captures the images of license plates of passing and parked vehicles, running an instant status check of the vehicle, and notifies the department of any stolen vehicles, Amber Alert vehicles, and persons that have outstanding warrants.  The information is relayed to the department via the police wireless intranet that covers the city.  The notification also logs the exact location with GPS, the date, and the time that the vehicle information was captured, as well as a picture of the vehicle.

If you are currently a member of the Citizen's Police Academy Alumni Association and you would like to drive this vehicle around the city to assist the police department, please contact Barbara Dunn to schedule a training session.  Below is a snap-shot of our awesome new wheels...
