Our Purpose

The police department offers various volunteer opportunities that interested alumni may participate in. Volunteer jobs include Expediter/Report Writing, Speed Surveys, Jail/Detention, Optika Entry, Cold Case Squad and Bike Recovery. The training and skills required for the volunteer jobs vary.

Any person interested in working as a volunteer must first submit a volunteer application and be certified as a City of Mesquite Volunteer. A medical exam including a drug test is also required and is paid for by the city. Volunteer applications are available from Lt. Artesi.

Below is a brief description of the various jobs and the minimum training that would be required for each.

Mesquite Police Department

Our follow-up contact with the complainant may provide additional witness information or suspect information, or may provide additional property description which could lead to identifying a suspect/suspects.

Expediter/Report Writing

Training requirement: Two three-hour classroom sessions, plus field training

Job requires a working knowledge of selected Penal Code laws, good writing skills, and good interviewing skills. Trained expediters may work at the Community Services Office at Town East Mall and will be qualified to complete selected police offense reports

Jail/Detention Program

Training requirement:
Observation/On-the-job training

Volunteers will learn while working "on the job" in the jail. Duties may include fingerprinting, photographing, logging property, answering telephone, and care of prisoners.

Bicycle Recovery

Training requirement: On-the-job training

Bicycle registration cards received from citizens will be entered into a computer database. Volunteers will also work to identify and locate owners of bicycles,  that have been recovered by the police department, but have not been returned to the owner.

All program participants will be required to be a City of Mesquite Volunteer.
An application must be submitted and approved prior to working an assignment.
